Heartwarming Thanks from Flood Victims

There's been a heartwarming gesture of thanks for the generous donors to the Health Hoof Appeal Sand Run.

Thanks to the Appeal, there's been over $20,000 worth of sand, sawdust and excavation work for owners and trainers affected by the floods around Mackay and Bowen.

To show their appreciation, Mackay trainer, Tracy Simmons organised for all donors to be recognised at Mackay's first race meeting back after the floods, last Wednesday. Every race was named after a donor.

"The generosity of those who donated was indescribable," said Tracy.

"Within four days we had over $20,000 which gave the local trainers the little bit of sunshine that they needed."

The effects of the cyclone were felt immediately, and Tracy said it was really hard to stand by and see their horses standing in slush.

"Seeing the horses back in clean dry stalls really put most trainers at ease and made the terrible week a little easier to get through," said Tracy.

She said naming the races after the people who helped them was the least they could do.

"It's our way of saying a huge thank you," said Tracy.

"I'm ever so greatful for their support. We all are.

"We hope they receive a lot of publicity from it and that it brings in some extra business."

Tracy particulary praised Stan Johnston for coordinating the Appeal.

"Stan is an amazing man, he put all the ground work into place and my part in the project was made so much easier knowing he was there to talk to if I needed anything.

"He does so much for this industry and he really deserves all the accolades he gets. The whole Johnston family are wonderful people, always there to offer a helping hand where ever they can," said Tracy.

The Healthy Hoof Appeal is continuing with owners and trainers in Rockhampton, South East Queensland and Murwillumbah the next recipients.
