Calls for Submissions for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Welfare Group

As you know Thoroughbred Breeders Australia, with the support of other major stakeholder groups such as the Australian Trainers’ Association and Australian Jockeys’ Association, established a welfare working group in February to make recommendations to improve our industry. This independent panel is headed by former Victorian premier Dr Denis Napthine.

While the work of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Welfare Working Group (TAWWG) has been slowed a little by Coronavirus, we are now calling for submissions to inform that process.

To help guide those wanting to make a submission we have developed an issues paper, which highlights the working group’s main areas of interest:

· What is good welfare
· Thoroughbred breeding
· Traceability
· Programs for horses leaving racing and breeding
· Regulatory framework
· Humane processing of horses
· Research and Development

I don’t think anybody who reads the document could accuse of us dodging any issues.

The working group would, I know, value your insight on these issues.

Thank you for your support, which is so important in dealing with this challenge.
