Thoroughbred Breeders Queensland Association is proud to announce the 2018 Queensland Breeding Champions.

For the second consecutive year Rothesay has won Champion Sire, in an absolutely tremendous result Spirit of Boom has taken out both the Champion 2yo Sire and the Champion First Season Sire, and Broodmare of the Year has been awarded to Pyramisa’s Lass, dam of Seasons Bloom.

It’s a terrific result for the Darling Downs region, with all these winners based from that area, testament to why it is regarded as Queensland’s leading thoroughbred nursery.

Rothesay is about to stand his second season at Lyndhurst Stud at Warwick, Spirit of Boom is the flagship sire for Eureka Stud at Cambooya and Pyramisa’s Lass is based at Raheen Stud at Gladfield, near Warwick.

“Queensland bred runners have once again had a tremendous season and matched it with the best on the national and international stage,” said TBQA President, Basil Nolan.

“I would like to congratulate all the award winners, particularly Eurkea Stud for the phenomenal season that Spirit of Boom has recorded.

“It has been a long time since Queensland has had a Stallion that has made the national racing industry take notice, and there’s exciting times ahead for our State thanks to Spirit of Boom.”

The award winners were presented with their trophies at the glamourous Racing Queensland Thoroughbred Awards at Brisbane’s Sofitel Hotel on Sunday night.


“It was a fantastic night that showcased these tremendous results for Queensland and I look forward to watching our horses, breeders, owners and trainers excel again this season,” said Mr Nolan.

2018 Qld Stallion of the Year – Rothesay

Rothesay is no stranger to the Queensland honour roll, taking out the coveted title of Queensland Stallion of the Year for the second consecutive season and winning Champion Freshman Sire in 2014/15.

In the 2017/18 season, Havasay won 5 races with his latest being the Listed Grafton Ramornie Handicap. Havasay amassed $286,175 in prizemoney to wrap a wonderful season for one of Queensland’s time honoured farms, Lyndhurst Stud at Warwick.

Rothesay is by the Champion sire, Fastnet Rock from the winning mare, Schiaperelli (by Woodman), coming from the family of Champion racehorse and stallion, Canny Lad, a dual Group 1 winner of the Golden Slipper and VRC Sires Produce Stakes.

Rothesay had just nine starts for four wins including the G2 BRC Qld Guineas, the G3 Lord Mayor’s Cup, the STC 2yo Blackberry Hcp, the STC Myboycharlie Hcp. He placed second in the G2 STC Theo Marks Hcp and the STC De Bortoli Wines Hcp and third in the Listed Gosford Guineas.

For the last season, Rothesay finished with 76 winners, 44 placegetters, 2 Stakes winners and placegetters with total prizemoney of A$3,126,322.

Rothesay will now proudly stand the upcoming season as Queensland’s most recent Champion Sire at Lyndhurst Stud, a nursey synonymous with Queensland breeding having stood this State’s most recent legendary sire, the late Sequalo.

What an incredible season for Queensland’s Champion First Season Sire, Spirit of Boom.

18 winners, joint leading 2yo Stakes winners in Australia with a total of five (Outback Barbie, Ef Troop, Jonker, Kinky Boom & Heaven’s Deal), ranked in the top 5 on the overall Australian 2yo Sires by both progeny and earnings with 18 race wins, racking up A$1,942,370.

The progeny of Spirit of Boom has obviously inherited their stallion’s race track ability. From 52 starts, Spirit of Boom greeted the judge first on 9 occasions (twice at Group 1 level – Doomben 10,000 & William Reid Stakes), 14 seconds and six thirds for prizemoney of $2,412,900.

His first crop of runners has finished the 2017/18 season with the stats of 52 starters, 18 winners, 10 placegetters, 5 stakes winners, 2 stakes placegetters with prizemoney just shy of A$2 million dollars – A$1,942,370.

After this outstanding season, Eureka Stud has put the ‘Book Full’ sign up for Spirit of Boom for the 2018/19 season, standing at a Queensland record service fee of $55,000 dollars.

Dual Group 1 winning stallion, Spirit of Boom finished the 2017/18 season as the joint leading 2yo Stakes-Winning Sire in Australia with a total of 5, and was also in the top 5 on the overall Australian 2yo Sires table.

His Stakes winners include:
Ef Troop – 5 starts for 2 wins, 1 third for prizemoney of A$275,100
Heaven’s Deal – 3 starts for 2 wins with prizemoney totalling A$97,610
Jonker – 3 starts for 2 wins banking A$145,460 dollars
Kinky Boom – 3 starts for 1 win with A$149,150 in the kitty
Outback Barbie – 4 starts for 1 win, 2 thirds with a handsome A$309,350 in the purse.

Spirit of Boom is a real Queensland success story and highlights the breeding grounds of the Darling Downs.

Being by Lyndhurst Stud’s two times Champion Sire of Queensland, Sequalo, from Eureka Stud’s stakes performing Temple Spirit, the winner of 8 races, with over $130,000 in prizemoney.

Spirit of Boom’s half-brother, Temple of Boom by Eureka Stud’s stallion Piccolo, won 11 races including the Group 1, ATC Galaxy Handicap in Sydney.

Spirit of Boom wrapped up the season with 52 starters, 18 winners, 10 placegetters, 5 stakes winners, 2 stakes placegetters and prizemoney of A$1,942,370.

His phenomenal results saw him crowned Queensland’s First Season Sire as well.

Broodmare of the Year – Pyramisa’s Lass (dam of Seasons Bloom)

Pyramisa’s Lass is an unraced 2008 bay mare by Not A Single Doubt from Pyramisa by Marauding.

She is the dam of two named foals to race, both winners, one being the outstanding Seasons Bloom.

Seasons Bloom was known in Australia as Le Capitaine. Bred by Raheen Stud at Warwick by the their now deceased stallion Captain Sonador, Seasons Bloom won his second start at Bendigo before heading to the shores of Hong Kong to leading trainer Danny Shum.

In the 2017/18 season, Seasons Bloom started 7 times recording 3 wins, 1 second and 1 third for prizemoney totalling HK$12,376,000 (A$2,142,842).

His feature wins included:
The Group 1 Stewards Cup over 1600 metres
The Group 2 JC Mile also over 1600 metres
As well as placing third in the Group 1 Hong Kong Gold Cup, second in the Group 3 Celebration Cup and finishing fourth in the Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Mile.

For these outstanding race performances at the highest international level, the dam of Seasons Bloom, Pyramisa’s Lass, is the 2017/18 Queensland Broodmare of The Year.

He’s another success story for the Darling Downs being bred on the fertile grounds of the Nolan family’s Raheen Stud near Warwick.
